What is SSL?

SSL or Secure Sockets Layer refers to the sockets method of passing data back and forth between a client and a server program in a network or between program layers in the same computer. SSL uses the public- and private-key encryption system, which includes the use of a digital certificate. URL's that use an SSL connection start with "https. SSL provides security for web transactions by handling authentication and data encryption

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral. SSL is an industry standard and is used by millions of websites in the protection of their online transactions with their customers.

The SSL protocol is used by millions of e-Business providers to protect their customers ensuring their online transactions remain confidential. In order to be able to use the SSL protocol, a web server requires the use of an SSL certificate.

Sites will get SSL encryption to cover any area that involves an exchange of data including login boxes, credit card payments, or any personal information. All web browsers have the ability to interact with SSL secured sites so long as the sites SSL is from a recognized Certificate Authority, such as EBIZID.

To be able to create an SSL connection a web server requires an SSL Certificate. When you choose to activate SSL on your web server you will be prompted to complete a number of questions about the identity of your website and your company. Your web server then creates two cryptographic keys – a Private Key and a Public Key, a certificate signing request that you provide to EBIZID.

The Public Key does not need to be secret and is placed into a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) – a data file also containing your details. You should then submit the CSR to EBIZID. During the SSL Certificate application process, the EBIZID Certification Authority will validate your details and issue an SSL Certificate containing your details and allowing you to use SSL on your web server. Your web server will match your issued SSL Certificate to your Private Key. Your web server will then be able to establish an encrypted link between the website and your customer’s web browser.

The SSL protocol remain invisible to your customers. Instead their browsers provide them with a lock or other green bar visual indicator to let them know they are currently protected by an SSL encrypted session – the lock icon or the green address bar, clicking on the lock icon displays your SSL Certificate and the details about it.

There are several types of SSL certificates in the market, Domain validated certificates which are only validated by the details that are on file at the web site owners domain registry and the extended validation certificates which are validated through a rigourous vetting standard in which the web site owner or business must provide proof that they are a legally registered business and will need to provide business documents, photo identification, bank records and must have several documents signed off by a notarary.
